We depart for Diyarbakır on a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul Airport at 06:00.
Hasanpaşa Han - Grand Mosque - Inside the City Walls
We land at Diyarbakır Airport at 08:05. After meeting our vehicle and guide at the airport at 08:30, we head to Hasanpaşa Han in central Diyarbakır, famous for its breakfast spots. Following breakfast, we visit Diyarbakır Grand Mosque, known as the 5th Great Mosque of the Islamic World. Afterwards, we will visit Surp George Church and the Inner Castle of Diyarbakır.
Zerzevan Castle
After completing our tour of Diyarbakır, we set out for Mardin. Our first stop along the way is Zerzevan Castle. We explore this magnificent castle, which has garnered attention in recent years with its impressive excavations and artifacts. We see the ruins of the city, including the Mithras Temple built as a Roman settlement, and then continue to Mardin.
Kasımiye Madrasah - Mardin City Tour
Then, we visit Kasımiye Madrasah, our first sightseeing stop near the city center in Mardin. This beautiful monument, one of the rare Akkoyunlu works in Anatolia and considered the finest example of Mesopotamian madrasahs, is a great place to tour and take photos. Afterwards, we head to a restaurant where we'll sample local flavors for lunch. After our meal, we continue our tour in the city center of Mardin. The tour, which will begin at the Sabancı City History Museum and be conducted on foot, will include visits to Şahtana Mansion, Şehidiye Mosque, Mardin Streets, Abbaras, Zinciriye Madrasah, Grand Mosque, Sokulbakar Bazaar, and the Church of the Forty Martyrs. Afterwards, we settle into our hotel and rest for a while. In the evening, we gather for dinner to discover more of Mardin's local flavors.
After enjoying breakfast at the hotel in the morning, we begin a wonderful day.
Midyat & Mor Gabriel Monastery & Yazidi Village Visit
Our first stop of the day will be Midyat. Our Midyat tour includes strolling through Midyat's streets, the State Guesthouse, and the bazaar famous for its filigree craftsmanship. After the Midyat tour, we will visit the historic Deyr-ul Umur (Mor Gabriel) Monastery, located nearby, with its captivating stories. We will see the Great Mosaic Church, Theodora Dome, Virgin Mary Church, and Saints’ House. After enjoying coffee with a view of Midyat, we'll visit the nearby Yazidi Village. Our first visit will be to Bacine (Güven) Village, where we can best observe the traditions of Yazidi life. Afterwards, we will have lunch at a local restaurant offering regional flavors.
Nusaybin - Mor Yakup Church
After lunch, we will return to Mardin via Nusaybin. In this district located right next to the Syrian border, we will visit Mor Yakup Church, one of the region's most important monasteries. Built in the name of Mor (Saint) Yakup, who is known as a healer, this monastery, dating back to the 5th century, is believed to be located on the site of an ancient Persian temple. After visiting the monastery, which is currently on UNESCO’s Temporary World Heritage List, we return to Mardin.
After breakfast at the hotel, we set off towards the Dara Ruins.
Dara Ruins
This fascinating ancient site, one of the rare examples in Southeastern Anatolia that has survived to the present day and named after the Persian King Darius, allows us to trace the footprints of the region's civilizations. After seeing the Necropolis, Stone Quarry, Cisterns, and City Walls, we return to Mardin.
Deyr-ul Zafaran Monastery
After lunch, our next stop is the Deyr-ul Zafaran Monastery. Located 5 km east of Mardin, this monastery served as the patriarchal center of the Syriacs worldwide for 639 years. Here, we visit sections such as the Sun Temple, Cemetery, School of Medicine, Church, and Baptistery. After taking photos, we finish our day by sipping coffee at Marangozlar Kahvesi with a view of Mesopotamia. After enjoying some local shopping, we set off towards Diyarbakır Airport. We return to Istanbul Airport on the 20:00 Turkish Airlines flight and bid farewell until another BUKLATUR trip.
