Svalbard Northern Lights Tour

We take the 09:45 morning flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen and greet Svalbard Island. We are now in the northernmost inhabited region of the world. Arriving on the island at around 13:00 local time, we head towards our hotel. After some rest at the hotel, we have a brief orientation. We explore the town and then visit the Svalbard Museum. After the museum visit, we return to our hotel.

This morning, we depart from the hotel and set out towards Trapper’s Station in Bolterdalen, where around 100 friendly Alaska huskies are eager to meet you. Once we arrive, we’ll prepare for an exciting journey with our team of dogs, taking about 4 hours round trip. Accompanied by our experienced guides and dogs, you’ll have the chance to fully enjoy the peace and breathtaking polar nature while experiencing this activity against the stunning backdrop of Spitsbergen. (On this journey, two people share a dog team and take turns driving.)

When we reach the glacier, we’ll put on our helmets and headlamps, and with proper equipment, get a closer look inside the glacier to discover its fantastic ice and rock formations shaped by the forces of nature. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy a lunch outdoors, soaking in the beautiful scenery.

When we return to the husky kennels, all participants will have a chance to cuddle and say goodbye to the dogs in their teams. :(

After breakfast at the hotel today, we leave our hotel and set out on a snowmobile exploration towards Isfjord Radio, located at Kapp Linné about 90 km west of Longyearbyen. During this adventure, we will cross glaciers, mountains, and frozen fjords and visit fascinating historical sites. You will experience a tranquility and silence that is hard to find elsewhere. If you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the polar bear, known as the "King of the Arctic!" After this long snowmobile journey, we arrive at the radio station and spend the night there.

After a hearty breakfast, we set off towards Longyearbyen. Depending on the weather and snow conditions, our guide will choose today’s route, but on the way back to Longyearbyen, we will visit the Russian mining town of Barentsburg. Barentsburg, located at the heart of the Isfjord radio and Longyearbyen, will be an ideal spot for a lunch break. Here, we’ll get an idea of what life is like in this isolated Arctic town and visit some historic Russian buildings. It will also be an opportunity to learn more about the history of Spitsbergen. By afternoon, we will have arrived in Longyearbyen.

After breakfast, we pack our belongings, leave the hotel, and set out to visit our last two stops in Longyearbyen. First, we go to Mine 3 and experience a real mining adventure. Then, we visit the Global Seed Vault to learn why it is located here and its purpose, before heading towards Longyearbyen Airport. We travel to Oslo by NAS flight departing at 15:00 and settle into our hotel. Dinner will be at our hotel.

(If time allows, we will visit Adventdalen, the Eiscat radar, Nordlys station, and the old airport to take beautiful landscape photos.)

After breakfast in the morning, we take a short walk around the Akerselva River and in the Grünerlokka neighborhood. We photograph the famous graffiti here and stroll along the riverside, then return to our hotel to collect our belongings and set out towards Oslo Airport. See you on another BUKLATUR trip.
