Norway is perhaps most famous for its iconic fjord landscapes. The Norwegian coastline creates this iconic scenery. With so many fjords to choose from, deciding which one to visit can be difficult. We've prepared a list of the 6 most beautiful fjords in Norway—and a hidden gem known only to locals.

#6: Lyngen Fjord

When thinking about Norwegian fjords, those above the Arctic Circle are often overlooked. Lyngenfjord is definitely one that deserves a spot on this list. Located near Tromsø, this region has much to offer. See the Northern Lights in winter or the midnight sun in summer, go dogsledding or reindeer sledding, skiing, glacier hiking, ice climbing, or even bungee jumping. Lyngenfjord is worth visiting in every season.

#5: Hardanger Fjord

For stunning scenery and nature, look no further than Hardangerfjord. Spring is the time to visit the Hardanger region, when many fruit trees are in bloom. Near the fjord, Hardangervidda is a paradise for hikers: a national park with numerous trails ranging from day hikes to hut-to-hut trekking trips. You can visit Vøringsfossen waterfall here, which plunges 182 meters (597 ft) down a magnificent cliff.

Located south of Bergen, this region is home to one of Norway's most iconic landmarks, Trolltunga (warning: please go elsewhere if you want to avoid crowds). For the best experience, camp overnight here and watch the sunrise from this incredible rock. For a more icy adventure, you can also hike on the Folgefonna glacier.

#4: Lysefjord

This fjord is the southernmost on this list and features a special icon almost everyone knows: Pulpit Rock (Norwegian: Preikestolen). The 6-kilometer hike to this iconic landmark involves climbing 350 meters (1150 ft). The hike can get extremely crowded during high season, so we recommend doing it early in the morning or late in the evening. For a more interesting experience, try an off-the-beaten-path hike with a guide. If you want a real workout, climb the 4,444 steps of the Flørli stairs.

#3: Nordfjord

To experience the very best Norway has to offer in a single fjord, you can visit our home fjord, Nordfjord. This fjord is off the beaten path and far from Norway's busiest tourist spots. On a holiday in this stunning region, you're sure to find something that suits you. From Bremanger's coastal area to Loen's inner fjord, there's a wealth of sights and things to do.If you're up for adventure: hiking, paddling, cycling, climbing, or heading out on a scenic road trip are all options. With more than 230 marked hiking trails, there are countless mountains, meadows, and shorelines to discover.

#2: Nærøyfjord

One of two fjords listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Nærøyfjord inspired the landscapes of Disney's Frozen and the TV series Vikings. But more than that, it's a unique and wild scene. This branch of Norway's largest fjord, the Sognefjord, is surrounded by green forests and snow-capped peaks. Planning to visit this natural gem? This fjord can only be experienced by boat or on foot. You can do so by passenger boat from Flåm or Gudvangen, or by car ferry from Gudvangen or Kaupanger. In Gudvangen, there’s also a fun Viking village worth visiting.Experience Nærøyfjord on a sightseeing trip

#1: Geiranger Fjord

A landscape formed during the ice age as glaciers advanced across Norway. It’s no wonder Geirangerfjord is one of Norway’s most famous and visited fjords. The region is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional beauty. The fjord is smaller than the others on this list but offers a wealth of activities and experiences.

Take a boat trip to see thundering waterfalls like Suitor and Seven Sisters, or spend a day or two skiing for a more adventurous experience. You can also visit the historic Skageflå farm perched on a high cliff or head to the viewpoint on the Eagle Road and continue along Norway's Scenic Route Trollstigen.
