After meeting with the guide at Rize airport, we set our course for the first stop of the tour: Pazar Hemşin Valley.
Akyamaç Waterfall
This valley was once traversed by the trade route that included the route of the Maiden’s Castle, Ciha Castle, Zil Castle, and Kale-i Bala. We will also venture into the depths of this valley. On the way, the first thing we will encounter is the only four-arched and largest stone arch bridge in the Black Sea region: the 4-Arched Stone Bridge. After a brief photo break here, we continue for about 20 minutes through the valley to reach Akyamaç Nature Park. Our main visit here will be Akyamaç Waterfall. Descending via the walkway built through deep forest cover, we come face to face with the 13-meter-high waterfall. After a photo break, we will climb back up the same path. Following a tea break, we will ascend to Gito Plateau, which is set at 2,000 meters and famously immortalized in folk songs. After a 1.5-hour drive, we will arrive at the plateau.
Gito Plateau & Badara Hamlet
At Gito, overlooking the Fırtına Valley, our view will include Pokut Plateau, Çat Village, Badara Hamlet, the Altıparmak Mountains, and, if the weather is clear, the Georgian Mountains. Of course, a sea of clouds may also await as a different scenic alternative. First, we will have lunch at the plateau, then take a short trip up to Gito Hill. The view here is breathtaking—a 360-degree panorama from a point that also overlooks the Black Sea. From here, we will see the entire Kaçkar range and many of the plateaus and valleys we will be visiting. With a roughly thirty-minute walk downhill (longer if it’s blueberry season), we’ll return to the plateau. On our way to the hotel, we won’t miss Badara Plateau. After a short stop at the plateau, which offers stunning photos with its small central lake, we will descend to the Fırtına Valley and reach our hotel.
Today, after breakfast, we will visit two stunning plateaus.
Sal Plateau & Pokut Plateau & Eynetap
Depending on the weather and road conditions, we will take a suitable vehicle up to Pokut and Sal Plateaus, two breathtaking spots that have appeared repeatedly in newspapers and magazines and are favorites for Instagram posts. Both plateaus are situated at an altitude of 2,000 meters. All the houses perched on these hilltop plateaus are made entirely of wood. Surrounded by pristine, wild forests, their untouched beauty is complemented by an incredible view.
After about a one-hour journey from the hotel, we reach our first stop: Sal Plateau. The broad expanse of meadow at the front and the row of plateau houses behind offer a unique kind of beauty. Sitting on the bench at the top of Sal, soaking in the fresh air and the scenery, is an experience you have to live to believe. After our time at Sal Plateau ends, we continue on to Pokut Plateau.
The half-hour flat forest walk between the two plateaus adds another special touch to the day. After this short walk, we will enjoy the view from Pokut Plateau—a panorama of the sea on one side, the Kaçkar Mountains on the other, and, if we're lucky, a sea of clouds and small mountain isles peeking through. Surrounded by untouched, ancient forest, you won't be able to get enough of Pokut. During our break overlooking the view in Pokut, we will have some surprise treats for you. After exploring and enjoying the plateau, we will walk through the plateau houses into the forest and arrive at Eynetap. Here, we will relax on the meadow and take a short break before returning to our hotel.
After our breakfast, we set off towards Kale Plateau.
Kale Plateau, Kale-i Bala
The plateau is small and the valley it sits in is beautiful, but its main feature is that the sibling of Zil Kale (Kale-i Zir - Lower Castle) is here. It's called Kale-i Bala, which means Upper Castle. Although it hasn't survived as well as Zil Kale, you may want to climb to the top for a 360-degree view. Leaving behind this castle, which few people have seen, and its scenery, we continue on to Çiçekli Plateau.
Çiçekli Plateau
After arriving at the plateau and taking a short rest with the view, we hike through stunning landscapes to the meeting point with our vehicle. Afterwards, we meet our vehicle, descend to the valley floor, and move on to lunch.
Mollaveyis Village - Çinçiva Village Walk, Historic Mansions
On the second stage of the day, we'll walk from Mollaveyis Village to Çinçiva Village (Şenyuva). The entire trail is within the forest. We'll be surrounded by chestnut, linden, and spruce trees. After a 45-minute walk, we reach the Zizna area and visit the historic mansions.
Then, we leave Zizna and continue with our walk. Following the paths through the forest, we walk another 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach the Çinçiva Bridge, completing the first stage of the day. After taking a group photo on the historic Çinçiva Bridge, we return to our hotel.
Verçenik Plateau
After our breakfast, we set out towards the foothills of Mount Verçenik, the second highest mountain in the region at 3,711 meters. From here, we take a short tour of the surroundings and follow the rivers and streams that form the Storm Valley to their sources. Our route ends at Verçenik Plateau. After a brief walk and exploration on the plateau, we return.
Elevit Plateau & Çat Village & Palovit Waterfall & Zil Castle
After leaving Verçenik Plateau, we descend the valley, reunite with our vehicle, and head to Elevit Plateau at an altitude of 1,800 meters. Once the most visited and the liveliest during the Vartivor festival, the now "unknown-population" Elevit Plateau longs for its bustling days of the past. After a walk and photo break on the plateau, we proceed to Çat Village. Of course, we don't forget to take a photo break at Çat Bridge on the way. :) After leaving Çat, we turn our route towards Palovit Waterfall. This 15-meter-high waterfall is not the tallest in the region, but it has the highest flow. Those who wish can go down from the road and take photos at the base of the waterfall. After leaving the waterfall, we visit Zil Castle (Zir Castle), located in the middle of the valley and dating back to the 14th century, learn about its history, and return to our hotel.
