►Tour starting point and time: 10:30 Copenhagen Airport ►Based flight: CPH-FAE 18.35
For the Faroe Islands (FAE), the transfer point is Copenhagen (CPH) Airport. Flight schedules and connecting flights may vary. Please contact our office for updated flights.
After meeting with your guide at Copenhagen Airport in the morning, our first stop is the autonomous hippy commune, Free Town Christiania, located in the Christianshavn district of Copenhagen. We tour this vibrant town and then head to a cafe or bar for a drink. Afterwards, we leave Christiania and take a break for lunch. We then walk through Nyhavn on our way to the Botanical Garden. After visiting the Botanical Garden, we return to Copenhagen Airport. Next, we fly to the Faroe Islands on the 18:35 Atlantic Airways flight. We land in the Faroe Islands at 19:50 local time. From here, we travel directly to Torshavn and check into our hotel. In the evening, we meet again for dinner.
After having breakfast at the hotel in the morning, we set off for Kalsoy Island. Following a journey of about 1 hour, we reach Klaksvík. Here, we board the ferry and cross from Klaksvík to Syradalur Village on Kalsoy Island, which also means 'flute.' From here, we head to Trollanes, the northernmost village on the island. We begin our hike towards Kallur Lighthouse. In this area, where there is no distinct trail and the grass is spread out before us like a carpet, we follow the traces of sheep flocks northward. After about a 30-40 minute walk, the lighthouse comes into view. Once we arrive at the lighthouse, we enjoy the scenery and begin taking photos of the surroundings.
(This is the spot where the National Geographic photo was taken.)
The wind can always be quite strong here. Therefore, we recommend that you choose clothing that will protect you from the wind. After leaving the lighthouse, we return via the same route. Next, we go to Mikladalur Village. First, we visit the mermaid statue. After listening to the story of this statue, we grab a bite at the café in the village. Afterwards, we return to Torshavn and take a city tour. During the tour, we will visit the Parliament of the Faroe Islands, Torshavn Cathedral, and stroll through its streets and avenues. After the tour, we relax at the hotel, and later head out for dinner.
After breakfast, we set out for our tour to the villages of Saksun, Tjørnuvík, and Gjógv. Our first stop will be Saksun, renowned for its unique settlements. Situated at the end of a fjord, this village is surrounded by the lush green Koppenni and Melin Mountains. Here, we'll visit the sea water lagoon, the old church, and the Duvugardar Farm with its stone walls and turf roofs. Turf roofs on the local houses are very practical and require minimal maintenance. The turf protects many homes from wind and humidity. Its color changes with the season, turning brown in autumn, white in winter, and a blossoming green in spring and summer.
After leaving Saksun, we head towards Tjornuvik. The route will take you from Saksun to Tjornuvik along the Dalsa River, which features ever-changing landscapes and numerous waterfalls, both large and small. Before reaching Tjornuvik, we'll stop at the Fossa Waterfall. Tjornuvik is the northernmost settlement on Streymoy Island. The village sits in a secluded inlet with towering mountains and a beautiful beach.
After leaving Tjornuvik, we travel from Streymoy Island to Eysturoy Island. Once we arrive on Eysturoy, we'll enjoy views of the zig-zag road leading from Slaettaratindur, the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, to Funningur. With a hike towards the peak of Slaettaratindur, we will reach the highest summit of the Faroe Islands.
If time allows after our summit hike, our final village visit today will be Gjogv at the northernmost tip of Eysturoy Island. Gjogv Village is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in the Faroe Islands. After exploring and taking a rest break at local cafés, we return to Torshavn.
Our first stop today will be the small village of Vidareidi on Vidoy Island, the northernmost settlement in the Faroe Islands. After a short walk around the village, we will climb Mount Villingdalsfjall, the highest peak in the Faroe Islands. After a walk of about 5 km, during which the slope will increase significantly at times, we will reach the summit. Once at the summit, we take some time to enjoy the view. We then return the way we came. After completing the hike, we leave Vidareidi and set our course for Vestmanna for our boat tour.
The boat tour departs from the harbor in Vestmanna, a village set in an impressive amphitheater-like landscape. You will also have the chance to enjoy the café right next to the departure point.
As the boat tour begins, we will first encounter striking sea cliffs. We will sail through breathtaking nature and discover the amazing wildlife just outside Vestmanna. The Vestmanna Sea Cliffs are among the must-see places in the Faroe Islands. During this two-hour boat trip, we will observe rock stacks rising from the sea and a rich birdlife.
If the weather conditions allow, we will pass through rocky passages. This natural attraction will bring you close to puffins and other bird species nesting on the narrow ledges of the cliffs.
From the boat, we will see high mountain peaks on the island of Streymoy and many caves along the shoreline. We will get within just a few meters of the highest cliff in the Heygadrangur area, which rises 144 meters above the North Atlantic Ocean. The absence of any human-made structures during this entire boat trip will be another beautiful aspect of the experience. :)
After the boat tour ends, we will spend some time in Vestmanna before returning to Torshavn.
After breakfast, we set out to explore Mykines Island, the bird paradise of Vagar and the Faroe Islands. Today will be a very long day; our return to Torshavn will be after 21:00. However, let's not forget that it doesn't get dark until after 22:00. :)
Our first stop today is Traelanipan. Here, we begin by walking towards Lake Leitisvatn. When we reach the lake, we'll see that it appears to be suspended above the ocean on rocky cliffs. After photographing this unique sight, a short walk will take us to Bosdalafossur Waterfall, where you'll see water from Lake Leitisvatn cascade into the Atlantic Ocean.
Leaving here, we'll visit the Mulafossur Waterfall in Gasadalur.
Before reaching Gasadalur, we'll enjoy the enchanting village of Bour, famous for its turf-roofed houses. After relaxing a bit on the village's coast, we'll see Mulafossur Waterfall and then depart from Vagar Island.
Depending on weather, road, and transportation conditions, we'll head to either Sorvagur or Torshavn. From the port of Sorvagur we'll take the ferry, or from Torshavn, the helicopter to Mykines Island.
Upon arriving in Mykines, we'll reach the island's only settlement, located a hundred meters above the pier. This coastal village is adorned with colorful wooden houses and turf roofs. In winter, only about 10 people live on Mykines; in summer, the population rarely exceeds 200.
Every summer, tens of thousands of birds nest on Mykines Island. After about an hour's walk from the village, you'll reach the breathtaking lighthouse on the Mykinesholmur islets and get even closer to the puffins along the way.
Once our island tour is complete, we'll return to Torshavn by ferry or helicopter.
